Substrate for microgreens: peat, coco, grow mats or hydroponics (2026)

Status: October 2, 2026.

The four options in one table

MediumProsCons / watch-outsBest for
Cocopeat (80–90%)cheap, good water-holding, pH ~5.5–6.5, compostablereusable only 1–2 times; quality varies between bagsdefault choice for most species
Peat + perlite (~80/20)light, very sterile, predictableslightly more expensive; peat is a natural resource under pressure β€” coco is the greener alternativestarters who want consistency
Grow mats (reusable foam)reusable for years, sterile, ideal for tiny seedslower water-holding than substrate β€” water more often; must be disinfected between batchesvery small seeds (quinoa, sunflower, lentils) and high-frequency batches
Hydroponics (rockwool/leca, no substrate)fastest growth, cleanest finish, scalableyou must control pH 5.5–6.5 and EC ~1.0–1.5 mS/cm; more failure modes (damping-off if hygiene slips)growers who enjoy tinkering and want volume

Practical recommendation

  1. Start with cocopeat + 10–20% perlite for most species β€” cheapest and forgiving.
  2. Add grow mats for tiny seeds β€” they keep even, fine seed placement without the fines of a loose substrate.
  3. Go hydro only when you already run 3+ trays a week and want throughput; the substrate version is not β€œworse”, just slower per batch.

Hygiene rule (matters more than the medium)

Whichever medium you pick, sterile substrate + clean trays is the damping-off prevention step β€” see the troubleshooting article. Reused substrate should be disinfected (e.g. hot water ~70 Β°C or a diluted chlorine solution, then rinsed) and stored dry.
