Microgreens Growing Trays vs Grow Mats vs Smart Gardens: What to Buy in 2026
The three ways to grow microgreens at home
- Tray + soil or coco coir — the classic. Cheapest per harvest (~$5–10 for a 5-tray stack), most forgiving, slightly messier.
- Grow mats (hydroponic pads / agar jelly) — clean, no medium to dump at the end of the week; ideal for kitchens and renters. Mats cost ~$0.30–0.80 per grow once you own reusable trays.
- Smart gardens (self-watering pods + LED) — the "appliance" route: $60–150 up front, pods per harvest; lowest effort, highest long-term cost per gram.
Grow time and difficulty by crop
| Crop | Days to harvest | Difficulty | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Radish | 5–7 | Very easy | Fastest; great first grow. Spicy when mature. |
| Sunflower | 7–10 | Easy | Tall, heavy — needs a weight on the seed during blackout phase. |
| Broccoli | 5–8 | Easy | Mild; most popular for health reasons (sulforaphane). |
| Pea shoots | 8–12 | Medium | Needs pre-soaking 8–12 h; watch for mold if overwatered. |
| Basil | 8–14 | Harder | Loves heat and light; slow start, worth it for flavor. |
| Wheatgrass | 7–10 | Easy | Juicing staple; use mats to avoid root mess in blenders. |
Blackout, light, water: the 3 knobs that decide your harvest
- Blackout phase (first 3–4 days): weight + darkness produces thick stems. Skip it and you get spindly, pale seedlings.
- Light after blackout: 12–16 h/day. A bright windowsill works in summer; plan for a $20 clip LED in winter — window-grown microgreens stretch and lodge.
- Watering: bottom-water or mist, never shower the canopy. Mold almost always traces back to wet leaves + poor airflow, not to the seeds.
Root hairs are not mold
The most common beginner panic: white fuzz on radish and broccoli roots. Root hairs are uniform, attach to stems, and disappear when misted; mold is webby, spreads across the medium, and smells musty. If it vanishes under a spray bottle — it was root hairs; your grow is fine.
What to buy first (starter logic)
| If you… | Start with | Budget |
|---|---|---|
| want the cheapest path and don't mind cleanup | 5× 1020 trays + coco discs + radish/sunflower seed | ~$15–20 |
| rent a clean kitchen, hate mess | reusable trays + grow mats + mesh lids | ~$25–40 |
| travel weekly and want zero-dial operation | smart garden (pods included) | ~$80+ |
